Brendan Perry and Hope Sandoval kill it . . . again

Never underestimate the power of artists to hit you over the head with a brilliant record. I've had two this month. The first is Brendan Perry's sweeping epic Ark, which has been almost a decade in the making. And you can hear why when you listen to it . . . lush landscapes . . . a plethora of deep topics . . . everything that made a Brendan song in DCD far above anything else in the same genre. Here, he blends the deep waters of Eye of the Hunter with the epic sound of his best DCD work and it creates a CD not to be missed.

With the 2nd, unlike Brendan's disc, which I have been anticipating for the last two years, Hope Sandoval and her group The Warm Inventions, completely blindsided me with an album that rivals, if not surpasses, her best Mazzy Star work. Through The Devil Softly is EVERYTHING you wanted from Mazzy's whole career and then some. In some instances, like "Blanchard" and "Wild Roses", she dabbles into mellower Sundays and Cowboy Junkies territory with songs that flow around your ears and fill the room (with the right speakers). Other songs like "For the Rest of Your Life, " "Lady Jessica and Sam" and "Sets a Blaze" remind us what promise Mazzy Star had and why this collection is called Through the Devil Softly . . . very haunting and eerily beautiful.

I highly recommend both of these releases. Do pick them up if you have the inclination.

The Wonderful Return of Fiction Plane

So I was perusing the net a week ago, just checking up on things, and decided to see if Joe Sumner and the boys of Fiction Plane had finished their new album yet. Their last CD, Left Side of the Brain, was a truly remarkable piece of work and I was looking forward to their follow up. For those not in the know, Joe is the son of Sting and his heritage can be heard in Joe's voice . . . but FP go far beyond that to create a sound and a sense of energy, rhythm and melody that is sorely missed in music today.

So I found out that not only had they finished working on their new CD, Sparks, but that it was out in the UK! Of course, not being a fair-weather fan, I ordered it immediately and had it sent from the UK to my place in MI. I expected not to be disappointed (their releases have been getting better and better since their first one, Everything Will Never Be OK) and I wasn't. It's a sweet mix of their signature sound that they've perfected through 3 releases (EWNBOK, their EP Bitter Forces and Lame Race Horses, and Left Side) and some deliciously eclectic detours. All in all, some very adventourous stuff! Plus, I picked up the Deluxe Edition, which included 3 B-Sides. That, and, because I'm a real fan, I also put in to get a copy of another B-Side I was able to download from the FP site. So, all in all, I'm pleasantly grooving to 15 new tracks. Heaven for a collector and for a FP fan.

For those of you who haven't heard them, do yourself a favor and pick up Left Side of the Brain. Then pony up the money to buy the Deluxe Sparks Import (because that's the only way you're gonna get it in the US, if you're in the US, before the Fall . . . and you don't wanna go all Summer without this disc) and then Everything . . .

And please, for the love of all that is holy . . . someone PLEASE tell me where I can get my hands on a CD copy of Bitter Forces? It's been a constant source of frustration . . . as it's also very good.

OK . . . it's late and I need to go slip into a nice coma . . . so enjoy . . . and thank you Joao, for allowing me to spread some new music!!

Yes, I am ressurecting this blog... Thanks for everyone who stopped by during this long hiatus and for the support of your messages. We are back now as a father of great twin boys!

And to start taking all the dust off, I am presenting to you guys this band that I just came randomly across - Civil Twilight. They are originally from Cape Town, South Africa, but their sound doesn't quite bring much of their african roots from what I could tell.

I found them on the weekly AOL Listening Party... I was very very surprise for their great sound and talent! Let's not make comparisons for now, just listen and take your own conclusions.

Grade: A+!

Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago

It is such a great feeling when a song just hits you right in your soul... Hard to describe, but easy to feel it...

Bon Iver is the work of Justin Vernon. He isolated himself in a remote cabin in Wisconsin for almost four months, writing and recording the songs on For Emma, Forever Ago, his haunting debut album. A few parts (horns, drums, and backing vocals) were added in a North Carolina studio, but for the majority of the time it's just Vernon, his utterly disarming voice, and his enchanting songs. The voice is the first thing you notice. Vernon's falsetto soars like a hawk and when he adds harmonies and massed backing vocals, it can truly be breathtaking.

Almost every song has a moment where the emotion peaks and hearts begin to weaken and bend: the beauty of that voice is what pulls you through every time. For Emma captures the sound of broken and quiet isolation, wraps it in a beautiful package, and delivers it to your door with a beating, bruised heart. Keane - Little Broken Words (2007) - REQUESTED!

Before you start wondering why you haven’t heard anything about Keane releasing a new album: this is a GREAT compilation of studio outtakes and B-sides made by a fan. It contains more of those ’slow’ emotional songs that you also found on the first album: it is more mellow than ‘Under the Iron Sea’! There are a lot of beautiful piano ballads and a lot of good covers: “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine” of The Walker Brothers, “What A Wonderful World” of Louis Armstrong and “Dinner At Eight” of Rufus Wainwright. It's gonna be a GReaT weekend listening to this new stuff by Keane!

Lior - Corner of An Endless Road (2007)

I stumbled across Lior's music browsing some musical blog which I can't remember the name now... but I immediately connected to his music. What a great singer and songwriter! This guy has LOTS of talent!
Lior was born in Israel but moved to Australia at the age of 10. He music is a mix of his Middle Eastern roots flavored with the singing style of several songwriters/singers from the 60s and 70s such as Paul McCartney, Neil Young, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell (which he mentions as musical influences).
Corner of An Endless Road is actually his 2nd album and it's full of eastern-tinged folk songs with plenty of fingerpicked acoustic guitar. It has been playing constantly in my car's CD player. The album is a rare, wonderful piece of work. This kind of music is a breath of fresh air above a sea of bands who forgo melody in favour of simple riffs and lyrics that are blatantly written for an audience. Lior writes of his experiences in such a sincere and honest way that one cannot help but be carried away by the story. Imagine a mix of Beatles, Nick Drake, Rufus Wainwright, Duncan Sheik and Led Zeppelin altogether....

Grade: A+

Stereogum's first perspective on Violet Hill: "Don't let the atmospheric and ambient noise swell out front scare you too much, "Violet Hill" is a rocker's march, with Brian Eno dialing Buckland's guitars into a more biting/less delayed crunch than A Rush Of Blood and X&Y (check the alarm siren bends, etc.). On the other hand, it looks like Brian's still OK with Mr. Martin's favored outro trick of gentle voice/piano chorus reprise. A few more notes to that guitar solo might've helped."

The reason comes from the name of the EP I recorded with my friends back in Brazil in 2003, right before coming to live in USA. Landon Pigg - Landon Pigg (2006)

Well, how I found him?? Easy, just Googling who was singing that commercial "A Diamond is Forever". Heralding from the inspirational streets of Nashville, Tennessee—Pigg is one of the most talented pop songwriters I’ve heard in a long, long time. There is not a lot of variety, but he is good at what he does. With all of that being said... and despite a very good vocal performance and an album rife with decent melodic hooks, this is an album that you are more than likely to forget.

Grade: A-

Your Vegas - A Town and Two Cities (EP)

It's difficult to judge a band based only on three songs, but the EP still left me impressed and hoping for a full length album.
The sound in the first two songs, while electronic in the good 80s tradition, is actually more reminiscent of The Killers. If you like that act, make sure to check Your Vegas.
The third song, "the way the war was won" is a good quieter rock ballad heavily influenced by Keane.

iTunes is selling this album (as of Jan '08) for a total of 99c, so it's a better place to go.

Plus/Minus - Let's Build a Fire (2006)

Plus/Minus (aka +/-) is a New York City-based indie-pop trio who surprised me with their great song "Leap Year" that was playing last night in the underground/indie internet-based radio Soma.fm. Their third album - Let's Build a Fire - presents an energetic and inventive set that combines melodic rock with carefully placed electronic touches and occasional stabs of noise (listen the propulsive "Steal the Blueprints"). Both in vocals and overall sound, the ensemble bears notable similarities to the Postal Service, but its guitar-based approach gives Plus/Minus an invitingly warm, fuzzed-out edge.
Grade: A+

Cosmotone - Cosmotone

In my humble opinion, a good song always gets me for its melody rather than the lyrics. If anything, that's the first impression that "register". Whereas for other ones, music+lyrics share the same importance, for me a good melodic line, or a good riff that sticks out "pays off" the value of a good song.

Cosmotone is a band from my hometown - Fortaleza, Brazil - that I just got introduced by its own bassist - Fabricio Alves - who I recently met and... boy... what a surprise!

Their self-titled debut album (independent release) is full of great pop songs with well-thought arrangements that bring a solid musical consistency throughout the album... The lyrics are permeated of stories about broken relationships, loneliness, uncertainty, forgiveness. Feelings that certainly all of us have once experienced. But perhaps here is where I think they can expand more in a future album - creating a broader palette of themes to match the beautiful of songs they crafted so well in this CD.
Congrats Fabricio and his band for putting out such a great work which impressed me for the quality of its melodic "hooks" - which kept playing over and over in my head...

Grade: A+

David Gray - The EP's 92-94

Like most of his work pre-White Ladder, Gray's approach here is sparser, often featuring only voice and guitar, and even more akin to the naked poetry of folk soulmates like Van Morrison. Birds Without Wings is just phenomenal!

You know, I should probably wait for this to go up on iTunes, but with so much coverage of my worthless non-guitar playing pursuits, I think I owe you all a bit of what I actually DO for a living. This is a song called "Say", and was written for the upcoming film "The Bucket List", starring the powerhouse acting duo of Nicholson and Freeman. Sarah Blasko - What the Sea Wants, the Sea Will Have

With a handful of ARIA nominations to her name, along with a coveted nomination for the 2006 Australian Music Prize for her smash debut album, "The Overture and The Underscore", I couldn’t help but think what every other idiotic Triple J listener was thinking: What’s the deal with this girl who’s musical stylings render herself liable to claims of being the illegitimate love-child of Thom Yorke and Bjork, (even the names are similar…hmmmmm. I’m starting to think that if Ms Blasko has a wonky eye that this theory may actually have some credibility).
Regardless, whether or not Bjork and the world’s most famous depressive did in fact hit it off years ago, no amount of speculation can overshadow the undeniable talent of one of Australia’s most capable pop princesses. Sarah Blasko has also risen to become one of Australia's most respected songwriters, as well as gaining a reputation for being one of Australia's most impressive live performers. As you can probably tell by looking at the album's cover, What the Sea Wants, the Sea Will Have is a darker record than it's predecessor, although it retains many elements of the pop songwriting that characterized her debut.
In one line - Sarah Blasko is real talent... amazing album from start to finish!

What to say about Jaco... A genius on the bass, someone that I admire, that took the electric bass to a different level, not afraid of transceding the 4-string bass limitations. A master of the fretless bass and all the harmonics one can get from that instrument.

Foo Figthers - Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace (2007)

The first time I heard "The Pretender" on the radio, I thought that Dave Grohl was expressing again his great mixed musical influences of the pop-modern rock with The Beatles (subtle chord progressions...). A beautiful masterpiece and certainly a powerful first single for this new release.
The whole album has a "60's rock" influence written over it, some tunes sound like they could have been written by The Beatles, or Paul McCartney, more specifically as one can clearly hear on "Statues". "Long Road to Ruin" flies jubilantly with a hook so gigantic you could land a hammerhead with it.
The rest of the album... well, the fact is that the songs are all good, even if they do sound similar to one another. When you don't try to push the envelope and go places where no one has gone before, you give up the chance of creating something that exists on an entirely different level.

Rocco DeLuca and the Burden - I Trust You to Kill Me

ROCCO DeLuca lives and breathes rock ‘n’ roll given that he was born the son of Bo Diddley’s touring guitarist and spent his youth on the road. His music aspires to the classic songwriting structure of rock ‘n’ roll stalwarts such as Jeff Buckley, Led Zeppelin and Pearl Jam. It's DeLuca's guitar playing that really stands out though (yet it is also distinctive for being built around the beautiful Dobro steel guitar which serves to give his songs a grittier and more notable edge). The result is a very fine debut album, worth listening.

The Honorary Title - Scream and Light Up the Sky (2007)

So the members of Brooklyn, New York, pseudo indie-rockers the Honorary Title really, really like Elvis Costello and Jeff Buckley. Or at least both their official web site and MySpace pages like to think so. Where they push it is where they claim to actually sound like both of those legendary artists. That’s a bit of a stretch.
“Untouched and Intact”, their first single from Scream and Light Up the Sky, is the best thing the 1980s didn’t produce. There seems to be a driving force behind many of the tunes that will have you tapping your feet (not good when you’re driving your car). A great surprise for this month of september!

Cary Brothers - Who You Are (2007)

A college mate of Zach Braff (indie film director, and star of comedy series, Scrubs), Brothers’ career got a leg-up when one of his songs (Blue Eyes) was used in the show and onto the Grammy-winning soundtrack to Braff’s movie, Garden State.
Who You Are is an impressive debut. There are moments when his self-confessed Brit-pop affections jar with the LA sun-soaked melancholy permeating his more mature material. “Who You Are” for example borrows Snow Patrol’s chugging introspection. Give it some play time and pretty soon you'll be singing "it's my jealousy/creepin' up on me" over and over… and over again.

Jeff Martin's Kingdom

Well, since I haven't blogged anything here for awhile, I figured I'd make two entries today. Another artist that I don't think has had a fair shake in America is Jeff Martin, or his previous band, the Tea Party. They put out 7 very good CDs off their label and 1 previous to being signed. The unfortunate turn of events that led to the band's demise will, I'm sure, never be fully realized because I'm sure all three of them have varying stories as to why exactly it happened. The main reason seems to be that Jeff wanted to get back to the roots of what his music (and, ultimately, the Tea Party's music) was all about. His first outing as a solo artist brings us Exile and the Kingdom, a sweet blend of his Rock-meets-World music stylings of the Tea Party with the acoustic leanings that he has expressed in interest in as of late. With the first song on the disc being the orchestral 'The World is Calling', one might be questioning whether it was a departure from the Tea Party's music Jeff needed or just a departure from his bandmates, as this stands up with the best of what the Tea Party offered (and feels like a continuation from their 4th CD, Triptych). Indeed, even the bluesy 'Black Snake Blues' feels like a throwback to their 2nd disc, Edges of Twilight. But anyone who's heard Jeff in interviews will know that's what he was going for in the first place. The songwriting on the rest of the disc is very fresh -- a logical growth between their rock opus, Seven Circles, and this record. The fact that it's a great mix of electric and acoustic numbers and the fact that Michael Lee (of Page and Plant fame) is on drums makes this CD even better.

Martin talks about the next CD being completely acoustic, but he said that about this one as well. The good thing about Jeff is that he's constantly evolving and that will always be his greatest strength. It will also be why he will remain at the forefront of iconic musicians of this age.

Queensryche - the Forgotten Genius

One thing I've noticed with a lot of my musician contemporaries is that most of them are afraid of change (which, to me, says 'oxymoron' about a musician); they don't step out of their protective and secure boxes to attempt anything that's outside of their realm of influences.

You see this of a good deal of music fans as well, unfortunately. I recently read a blog about Queensryche singer Geoff Tate and how QR's new CD (their follow-up to Operation: Mindcrime II, shown at right) will be 'a big surprise' to QR fans and that they would be touching on new areas of music writing. The fans were noticeably, for the most part, disturbed by this. In fact, the major debate for this particular set of QR fans was when they started to go downhill. Was it Empire? Promised Land? Hear in the Now Frontier? Q2K? None of them could decide. Very few of the fans actually acknowledged that they listened to the CDs that QR's been putting out since HITNF. A shame, really. Queensryche was always a band I felt akin to, musically. Not because I write in their vein of music (if you could even hold it within a catagory), but because they are CONSTANTLY trying to grow as musicians between releases. Even with OMC II, the sounds on the CD may have linked with the first CD (which, if you're a musician worth your salt and trying to produce an audio sequel, you need to accomplish for continuity purposes at least!), but their growth as musicians is apparant in every song on the disc. A lot may argue that OMC II isn't as good as the original (movies and music alike, I would assume, fall into the sequel syndrome of being compared instead of taken as a separate entity), but I say the CD, sitting on it's own, is just as great an achievement as any of their greatest work.

I, personally, am looking forward to a new QR CD. Actually, writing this has given me the ambition to complete my QR catalog. Oh, and if you are a fan and don't have the updated CDs with the extra tracks and the updated sound quality, I highly recommend them.

Buckley was never interested in selling out or shooting to the top of the charts, and that’s part of why his music seems so raw, so real, so untainted by corporate bigwigs with dollar signs in their eyes. He was a visionary, and through posthumous releases like So Real and whatever comes next, his voice remains a gift that keeps on giving. This compilation ncludes two rarities, 'So Real' (Live and Acoustic in Japan - non album version/ promo single) and 'I Know it's Over' . (Previously Unreleased - Smiths cover from a session at Sony Studios that was edited for broadcast on WNEW on April 6, 1995. It was not included on the radio broadcast.) Other highlights include 'Last Goodbye', 'Forget Her', 'Everybody Here Wants You' and more.

The Cinematics - A Strange Education (2007)

Formed in Glasgow not so long ago, the group has enjoyed critical praise and this debut album Strange Education, is a long-awaited affair for new fans who first saw them support the likes of The Editors. Powered by tight grooves that demand movement and passionate, powerful and thoughtful vocals, the Cinematics also bring emotion and warmth. The end result is music that transcends any trends or underground niche. Of particular note is the ripping cold-war guitar solo on “Keep Forgetting” – reminiscent of The Edge’s Unforgettable Fire-era work… more of this will earn The Cinematics some respect, if not Top 40 status.

Give New York-based post-punk outfit Interpol credit, then, for consistently living up to expectations. Though recorded for the first time with an outside producer - Rich Costey, the man who ramped-up Muse's space-rock aspirations on 'Black Holes & Revelations' - 'Our Love To Admire' is not exactly a departure. Instead, the band's third album plunges straight back into a world of brooding nighthawks, seedy streets and dark corners lit by violent neon blasts.

This is what the band members had to say about the issue, "Go Download it. Give yourselves taste. Feel free." So here's your taste of Church Mouth the first track off the album. Although the band was so nice as to say it was "O.K." to download the new album illegally we still encourage you to support the band here. This bands mysterious sound and melodic vocals are truly what their music is all about. Church Mouth is tremendously consistent and one of the premier rock albums of the year.

Lifehouse - Who We Are (2007)

Like Lifehouse's previous three albums, Who We Are contains lyrics that relate to both spirituality and romantic love - most of the band's songs are open to interpretation, making them applicable to many types of audiences. This time around, though, Jason Wade drew upon personal experiences that make the songs a little more obvious. Wade has also a terrific rock voice, and it's never sounded better ranging from heavy growls to soft-spoken falsetto—he even goes a cappella for the impressive start of "Storm". Who We Are is a good album, full of very catchy songs.
Grade: A-

Maps - We Can Create (2007)

Maps is essentially a Northampton U.K. gent named James Chapman. “We Can Create” would be his first album, although he has released a handful of eps that has created quite the buzz in certain circles. The record was co-produced by Valgeir Sigurdsson (Bjork) and mixed by Ken Thomas (Sigur Ros), so you can surmise the songs will have a layered sonic depth, while having a glossy major label type of feel to the songs. The record melds this sweet combination of My Bloody Valentine, Sigur Ros and Postal Service. The best electronic album I have heard so far this year! A terrific debut album more resplendent with each listen.

Grade: A-

Thirteen Senses - Contact

With producer Danton Supple at the wheel it is always going to be hard not to make comparisons between Thirteen Senses and Coldplay – a marketing gamble choosing this producer or mere coincidence. There is a lack of uniqueness in their sound... Undoubtedly Thirteen Senses are talented musicians but the edge is diluted underneath the schmaltzy big production making Contact an album full of rich gestures but hard to connect with. Maybe they used too much of the Coldplay Kit.
Grade: B-

Screaming Trees - Sweet Oblivion (1991)

Screaming Trees [ST] have a unique 90's grunge/60's hippy sound that blends so perfectly together, to create this amazing upbeat feel-good rock vibe, and yet still have the powerful angst in there. For once it's nice to hear a band that isn't singing about how sad their lives are, and when ST does sing about it, it sounds great without the depressing feeling. Mark Lanegan has a very unique, brisk voice that manages to create that awesome sound of his music. It's a shame ST never scored it huge, but their hit "Nearly Lost You" (which isn't near the best from this amazing album) will probably seal them immortality in the heavens of 90's rock.

Paul McCartney - Ever Present Past (New Single)

It's not very hard for one to not enjoy the work done by Paul McCartney. He continues to prove to the world (and to himself I would say) as one of the greatest modern songwriters. I'm not judging this entirely based on his lastest single - Ever Present Past. What intrigues me is his musicality - his ability of recreating new music and melodies that are NEVER a "commom place". There are certainly so many recent examples of bands that we could think of... but with 'Macca' is a little different... he never repeats himself.

"Ever Present Past" comes as tasty a fresh Mocha (no association here with the fact his new album will be released by Starbucks label with distribution by Universal Studios). Lots of keyboards layers with an upbeat tempo and melody. Very appropriate for this coming summer... The full album (Memory Almost Full) will come out on June 5th.

It always feels great when I can find a band that just hits me for their sound. That's the case with Captain. Hailing from UK, they have recently participated in the Mojo Magazine's Sgt Pepper's tribute CD covering "A Day In The Life".
What a great combination of vocals, keys and great melodies that don't get out of your mind. Do I need more? Well, I guess it's time to hit the sack now... That's it for tonight.

Stone Gossard Demo '91 - aka the Gossman Project (early Ten demos)

This tape is the earliest evidence of Pearl Jam around. Mike McCready, Stone Gossard, and Jeff Ament recorded a set of instrumental demos during the Temple of the Dog sessions with Matt Cameron (then with Soundgarden) in 1990 with the intention to find a new drummer and vocalist for this musical project.
This tape would eventually find its way to Eddie Vedder via Jack Irons (ex-RHCP) who used to play basketball together.

Greatest Bassists - Part 1 - Willie Weeks - Giving the Bass Guitar a Life

This weekend I'm starting a section which I'd love to get your feedback. Every week I'll cover a different bassist that I admire and inspires me on their playing. Although James Jamerson would be the ultimate Number 1 for me, I'm still gathering more data to write that one up.

This week the spotlight is on Willie Weeks:

Born in Salemburg, North Carolina, Weeks grew up working in the fields and listening to country, pop, and R&B on the radio. At age 12 he started singing and then playing guitar in a gospel group—learning on a homemade axe strung with fishing line—and when the group began performing alongside big-time acts, he got his first glimpse of an electric bass. “It was a Fender Precision,” Weeks recalled in a May ’90 Guitar Player interview. “I said, ‘Man, that’s it!’”
In the 30 years between Donny Hathaway’s Live and John Scofield’s That’s What I Say, Willie Weeks has played on more than 200 albums. Here’s a partial list of artists whose tracks his grooves have graced: Billy Joel, Chaka Khan, Michael McDonald, Buddy Guy, Aretha Franklin and so many others.
Currently his is touring with Eric Clapton. The snippet below that I took from Clapton's last performance in Detroit on April 5th, illustrates a little bit what Willie is able to do with the bass.

Sara Tavares - Balancê (2006)

First there was Cesaria Evora, Then Lura, and now, the Portuguese/Cape Verdean singer/composer/guitarist Sara Tavares. The title of this CD (pronounced bal-on-SAY) refers to the equilibrium necessary for balancing her mixed, Crioulo culture that stretches from Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Blessed with an angelic voice, and a knack for writing accessible compositions that are global, yet ancestral, Tavares is closer to Les Nubians than to Evora, as the title track makes clear. She's more about adapting her homeland's musical conceptions to include Angolan sembe Afrobeats on "Poka Terra," with rapper Melo D, reggae, and Cape Verdean coladeira rhythms on "Planeta Sukri," co-starring vocalist Boy Ge Mendes. Fadista Ana Moura helps Tavares tell her soulful story on "De Nua." With this heartfelt, autobiographical work, Sara Tavares emerges as a new dark and lovely diva for this decade. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Satellite Party - Perry Farrell's new super band

Judging by their first single - Wish Upon a Dog Star - Perry Farrell's new band is very promising. Later you learn that he has paired with Nuno Bettencourt (ex-Extreme) and this musical partnership not only defined sound but crystalized the band.
The debut album - Ultra Payloaded (to be released on May 29th) - features a host of guests participating in the recording. That includes The Red Hot Chili Peppers Flea and John Frusciante, UK production duo/beat-makers Hybrid, New Order/ Joy Division bassist Peter Hook, down tempo pioneers Thievery Corporation, Porno for Pyros' guitarist Peter DiStefano, Black Eyed Pea's Fergie, film composer Harry Gregson-Williams (Chronicles of Narnia, Kingdom of Heaven), and a 30-piece orchestra.
According the Perry's own words "Our album, 'Ultra-Payloaded,' is a story expressed through music. The story centers around a group of people known as the Solutionists. They're a brain trust of artists, musicians, technology cats and fashionistas that plan these wonderful underground parties. They become experts at the art of public display. All the songs on the record tie into the story line, but here are some excerpts that go along with each song."
